The Internet allows you to access vast amounts of resources and up-to-date information on a wide variety of topics. RESEARCH

How do I access the Internet? Our school uses a browser called Netscape. A browser is a special kind of software that allows a person to view webpages on the World Wide Web through pointing and clicking on links. The next slide shows you how to get into Netscape.

What's a homepage? A homepage is the first screen, called a "page," that you see when you view a site.
This is the location window where you type in the URL. How do I get to a homepage? To get to a homepage, you must type in an URL (Universal Resource Locator). Every file and page on the Web has a unique URL which is that page’s address on the Web. Here is the URL for Edison... http://www.pekin.net/pekin108/edison
How do I search for information? • Search by typing in the URL (address) • Search by using a designated bookmark • Search by subject or title through a kid-safe search engine
Use a designated bookmark. Click on BOOKMARK and find the site that was assigned by your teacher.
Type in the URL that was given to you by your teacher. http://whitehouse.gov
Use ONLY kid-safe search engines. Kid-safe search engines must be approved by the classroom teacher.
These highlighted links are in blue. How do I get from page to page? You can use a “link” to get from page to page by placing your mouse over the highlighted word or words. Your cursor will turn into a hand and you can click to get to the next page.
To go back to the previous page, click on BACK found on the navigational toolbar. To go to the next page, click on FORWARD found on the navigational toolbar.

How do I obtain this privilege? • Read over the Acceptable Use Policy with a parent. • Return the Internet Use Agreement with your signature and your parent’s signature. • Follow ALL rules on the next slide.
The student’s Internet driver’s license will be displayed at all times while using the Internet. • The student will only go to sites designated by the teacher. There is no surfing! • The student will not have email access unless it is through teacher email for a school purpose. • The student will not be allowed to access the Internet unless a teacher is present in the room the entire time. • The student will not give any personal information out over the Internet. • The student will pay fifty cents to obtain a new license if the original gets lost.
If this privilege is abused... • An unacceptable Internet Use Incident form will be filled out and given to Mr. Fitzanko or Miss Thompson • Mr. Fitzanko or Miss Thompson will revoke or suspend the Internet license for a determined period of time. • Parents will be notified.
A final note... We are fortunate to be in a school district that values our learning. Let’s make the most of it when entering “Cyberspace” to learn about the world outside of our classroom!
