SECO Secure Electronic Communications for Offices Cycle 1 Presentation Team Two Della Killingsworth Hassan Elrhazouani Stephanie Smith Matthew Thompson Jimmie Lyn Jackson >
Overview • Cycle 1 Accomplishments • Cycle 1 Obstacles • Box Design Changes • Fingerprint Scanner Interface • Locking Mechanism Design • Motion Detector System • Cycle 2 Goals
Cycle 1 Accomplishments • Individual hardware components for one complete mailbox • A working motion detector to identify mail • Lock opens and closes with different input signals • Lock and motion detector have been tested with sbRIO and software • Initial programming to facilitate overall control and component communication
Cycle 1 Obstacles • Development sbRIO did not function properly and actual sbRIO delayed until mid-October • Replacement sbRIO is scheduled to arrive this week • IR Transmitter did not have a strong signal for motion detector • Found a different transmitter that provides a better LED • Fingerprint scanner has a complicated datasheet and has been tedious to wire • Care is being taken to fully understand the functionality of the scanner board and crimping terminals were purchased for ease of connection
Box Design Changes • Made of Plexiglas • Mailbox dimensions 13 3/4” x 11 1/8” x 7 3/4” • Smaller door that folds down • Mail slot above door • Lock and motion detector above door
Interface between sbRIO and FIM 5360-LV • 9 pin connection required for operation of fingerprint scanner
Interface between sbRIO and FIM 5360-LV • Default input and output settings ideal for this application
Interface between sbRIO and FIM 5360-LV • No complete serial bus is available from manufacturer for connection • Connection can be constructed Crimp Housing Crimp Terminal
Interface between sbRIO and FIM 5360-LV • Better option is to salvage already-crimped wires from another crimp housing of different size and plug them into 9-pin housing
Interface between sbRIO and FIM 5360-LV • Implemented recommended circuitry for interface between 9-pin connector and sbRIO
Locking Mechanism Hardware • BJT Switch • High signal from sbRIO 12V across lock = OPEN • No signal from sbRIO 0V across lock = CLOSED
Locking Mechanism Software Locking Mechanism LabVIEW FPGA Code
Motion Detector Hardware • Emitter sends infrared light • Detector collects infrared light • Voltage measured after detector • No blockage, Vo = 0.2V • Blockage, Vo = 4V

Projected Cycle 2 Goals • Get sbRIO here and operating • Secure mailbox built • Lock override in place • Fingerprint scanner working properly • Email system setup to send email when mail is placed in mailbox • SECO should be fully functional!
