  3. Philip II • First absolute ruler- ruled completely alone • Spain was very wealthy • American Colonies supplied lots of gold & silver • King of Spain received 20-25% of every shipload

  5. The Spanish Armada • Devout Catholic • Married Mary Tudor of England • Sought to strengthen Catholic Church • Battled Protestants in Netherlands • Prepared a huge armada against England • Queen Elizabeth I returned England to Protestantism • England won and suprassed Spanish power

Spanish economic decline • Inflation • Population grew, so did demand causing prices to go up • Silver flooded the market, causing it to lose value • Made their enemies rich • Spanish goods more expensive • Borrowed $ from other countries to pay for wars • There were less able successors after Philip II • Only lower classes paid taxes • The Reconquista • Expulsion of Muslim and Jews from Spain • deprived the economy of many skilled artisans & merchants
