BRANCHES • LEGISLATIVE BRANCH (General Assembly, Congress, Senate) – Makes laws • JUDICIAL BRANCH (court system) – Interprets laws • EXECUTIVE BRANCH (Governor, President) – Enforces laws • Different branches have different powers due to SEPARATION OF POWERS • One branch can overrule another comes from CHECKS AND BALANCES

  5. ELECTIONS • PRIMARY ELECTION – parties decide who will represent them in the general election (same party) • GENERAL ELECTION – voters decide who will represent them in a political office

  6. The Constitution • An AMENDMENT changes the constitution • The ARTICLES OF CONFEDERATION outlines the powers of the government

  7. APPELLATE COURTS hear appeals (reviews errors in lower courts) • The attorney who represents the state in criminal cases is called the PROSECUTOR • A MEDIATOR can help resolve an issue to avoid a trial
