Terms & People to Know • Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC)- designed to regulate stock market and make safer for investors. • Agricultural Adjustment Act (AAA)- designed to end overproduction of crops and to raise prices. • Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA)- built dams, controlled floods, generated electricity.
Terms & People to Know • Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC)- employed young men to build up America’s infrastructure. • National Recovery Administration (NRA)- established codes for industry (min. wage, set prices)- designed to increase wages to workers could buy products.
Terms & People to Know • Public Works Administration (PWA)- built up infrastructure (bridges, roads, dams, power plants, government buildings)- created lots of jobs. • American Liberty League- Consisted of critics of FDR’s New Deal. • Huey Long • Charles Coughlin
Terms & People to Know • Second New Deal- focused more on general welfare of the people. • Works Progress Administration (WPA)- similar to the CCC, but employed more diverse group of people. • John Maynard Keynes- British economist; argued that deficit spending was needed to get America out of the depression.
Terms & People to Know • Pump priming- put money into hands of consumers… they buy more goods. • Social Security Act (1935)- established a pension system for retirees and provided unemployment insurance. (Note: Did not apply to African Americans. Women and widows received limited amounts)
Terms & People to Know • Rural Electrification Administration- provided money to electrical companies so that the companies could provide electricity to farms. • Wagner Act- recognized the right of employees to join labor unions and gave workers collective bargaining.
Terms & People to Know • Fair Labor Standards Act 91938)- established min. wage, and max. work week (44 hrs.) • Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO)- Union that appealed to more groups of people than the AFL. • United Automobile Workers Union (UAW)- staged the sit-down strike in Detroit. (1936).
Terms & People to Know • Court packing- FDR’s attempt to place more judges in the U.S. Supreme Court. (In order to get more to agree on New Deal). • Black Cabinet- African American leaders that helped advise FDR. • Mary McLeod Bethune- member of Black Cabinent. Fought for racial equality. • Indian New Deal- gave Native American economic assistance and greater control over their own affairs.
Terms & People to Know • New Deal Coalition- very diverse group that supported FDR. (southern whites, northern blue collar workers, poor midwestern farmers, African Americans). • Welfare state- government assumes responsibility for providing for the welfare of children, poor, elderly, sick, disabled, unemployed. • Frank Capra- director. Movies focused on ordinary Americans struggling.
