Neanderthals were… • Good hunters: used pitfalls – large hole covered with branches, leaves, and earth • Builders: covered mammoth bones with animal skins • Built drainage ditches in caves • First to bury their dead
Cro-Magnons • Named after rock shelter in France in 1868 • 100,000 years • Believe these to be first humans
Cro-Magnons - burin • Chisel to make other tools • Became better hunters • Increase in food supply
Spears • Threw spears which were safer • Kept distance from animals
Axe • Cut trees and make canoes • Maybe this is how firstAustralians arrived in Australia 40,000 years ago
Cro-Magnons also… • Made ornaments from bone, ivory, & shell • Were artists – paint, clay • Cooperated with other bands: hunting, social gatherings, trade
Cave Paintings • Cave paintings may have religious importance • Believed animals had spirits • Believed painting animals gave humans power over their spirits and helped in hunting
