Rediscovering Who Yeshua is? Matthew 16:16
Matthew 16 (The Passion Translation) 13When Jesus came to Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples this question: “What are the people saying about me, the Son of Man? Who do they believe I am?” 14They answered, “Some are convinced you are John the Baptizer, others say you are Elijah reincarnated, or Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.” 15“But you—who do you say that I am?” Jesus asked.
Matthew 16 (The Passion Translation) 16Simon Peter spoke up and said, “You are the Anointed One, the Son of the living God!” 17 Jesus replied, “You are favored and privileged Simeon, son of Jonah! For you didn’t discover this on your own, but my Father in heaven has supernaturally revealed it to you.
THE MINISTRY OF JESUS Why did Jesus release His power & authority? • His compassion and love for people (Lk. 7:12-15) • To bring glory to the Father (Jn. 17:4) • To fulfill prophecy (Matt. 5:17)
THE MINISTRY OF JESUS • The ministry of Jesus proved He was who He said He was, the proof and fulfilled promise of the Messiah was His authority over: • Nature and natural laws • Demons • Sickness • Death
THE MINISTRY OF JESUS1. The Authority of Jesus over Nature • Mark is emphasizing Jesus’ identity by demonstrating His power over nature (calmed a storm). Mark 4:35-37 35 On the same day, when evening had come, He said to them, “Let us cross over to the other side.” 36 Now when they had left the multitude, they took Him along in the boat… 37 A great windstorm arose…
The Authority of Jesus over Nature Mark 4:38-41 38 But He was in the stern, asleep on a pillow. And they awoke Him and said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?” 39 He arose and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace, be still!”…40He said…“Why are you so fearful?… 41 They feared exceedingly and said…, “Who can this be, that even the wind and the sea obey Him!”
THE MINISTRY OF JESUS 2. The Authority of Jesus over demons • Jesus healed the Gadarene demoniac (Mk. 5:1-20; cf. Mt. 8:28-34; Lk. 8:27-39). This was an unusual level of demonic bondage — it was probably the most severe case of demon-possession in all the land.
THE MINISTRY OF JESUS 2. The Authority of Jesus over demons Mark 5:1-4 1 Then they came to the other side of the sea, to the country of the Gadarenes. 2 …There met Him out of the tombs a man with an unclean spirit, 3 who had his dwelling among the tombs; and no one could bind him, not even with chains… 4 the chains had been pulled apart by him…
The Authority of Jesus over demons Mark 5:5-8 5 And always, night and day, he was in the mountains and in the tombs, crying out and cutting himself with stones… 7 he cried out with a loud voice and said, “What have I to do with You, Jesus, Son of the Most High God?...” 8 For He said to him, “Come out of the man, unclean spirit!”
The Authority of Jesus over demons • Jesus commanded the leading demon named Legion who had authority over many demons. The demon spoke of “my” (singular) and “we” (plural). A legion was made up of about 5,000 Roman soldiers. The word legion suggests their size and organization. “All” the other demons spoke (5:12).
The Authority of Jesus over demons Mark 5:9-13 9 Then He asked him, “What is your name?” And he answered, saying, “My name is Legion; for we are many”… 12 So all the demons begged Him, saying, “Send us to the swine…” 13 … Then the unclean spirits went out and entered the swine (there were about two thousand); and the herd ran violently down the steep place into the sea, and drowned in the sea.
The Authority of Jesus over demons Mark 5:14-20 14 So those who fed the swine fled, and they told it in the city and in the country. And they went out to see what… had happened. 15Then they… saw the one who had been demon-possessed… sitting and clothed and in his right mind. And they were afraid… 17 They began to plead with Him to depart from their region.
The Authority of Jesus over demons Mark 5:14-20 18 And when He got into the boat, he who had been demon-possessed begged Him that he might be with Him. 19 However, Jesus did not permit him, but said to him, “Go home to your friends, and tell them what great things the Lord has done for you…” 20And he departed and began to proclaim in Decapolis all that Jesus had done for him; and all marveled.
THE MINISTRY OF JESUS Mark 5:21-23 21 Now when Jesus had crossed over again by boat to the other side, a great multitude gathered to Him; and He was by the sea. 22 And behold, one of the rulers of the synagogue came, Jairus by name. And when he saw Him, he fell at His feet 23 and begged Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter lies at the point of death. Come and lay Your hands on her… and she will live.”
THE MINISTRY OF JESUS3. The Authority of Jesus over Sickness & Disease. Mark 5:24-28 24 So Jesus went with him, and a great multitude followed Him and thronged Him. 25 Now a certain woman had a flow of blood for twelve years. 26 … She had spent all that she had and was no better, but rather grew worse. 27 When she heard about Jesus, she came behind Him in the crowd and touched His garment. 28 For she said, “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.”
The Authority of Jesus over Sickness & Disease. Mark 5:24-34 29 Immediately the fountain of her blood was dried up… 30 And Jesus, immediately knowing in Himself that power had gone out of Him… said, “Who touched My clothes?”… 33 But the woman… knowing what had happened to her… fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth… 34 He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has made you well.”
The Authority of Jesus over Sickness & Disease. Mark 5:35-36 35While He was still speaking, some came from the ruler of the synagogue’s house who said, “Your daughter is dead…” 36 He said to the ruler…, “Do not be afraid; only believe.”
THE MINISTRY OF JESUS4. The Authority of Jesus over death Mark 5:37-39 37 And He permitted no one to follow Him except Peter, James, and John the brother of James. 38 Then He came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue, and saw a tumult and those who wept and wailed loudly. 39 When He came in, He said to them, “Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.”
The Authority of Jesus over death Mark 5:40-43 40 … But when He had put them all outside, He took the father and the mother… and those who were with Him, and entered where the child was lying. 41 Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, “… Little girl, I say to you, arise.”
The Authority of Jesus over death Mark 5:40-43 42 Immediately the girl arose… she was twelve years of age. And they were overcome with great amazement. 43 But He commanded them strictly that no one should know it, and said that something should be given her to eat.
People hated and were jealous of Jesus but some just misunderstood Him Mark 3:20-24 20 The multitude came together… so that they could not so much as eat bread. 21 But when His own people heard about this, they went out to lay hold of Him, for they said, “He is out of His mind.”
People hated and were jealous of Jesus but some just misunderstood Him Mark 3:20-24 22 And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem said, “He has Beelzebub,” and, “By the ruler of the demons He casts out demons.” 23 So He… said… “How can Satan cast out Satan? 24 If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.
People hated and were jealous of Jesus but some just misunderstood Him Mark 3:31-35 31 Then His brothers and His mother came, and standing outside they sent to Him, calling Him. 32 And a multitude was sitting around Him; and they said to Him, “Look, Your mother and Your brothers are outside…” 33 But He answered them, saying, “Who is My mother, or My brothers?”
People hated and were jealous of Jesus but some just misunderstood Him Mark 3:31-35 34 And He looked around in a circle at those who sat about Him, and said, “Here are My mother and My brothers! 35 For whoever does the will of God is My brother and My sister and mother.”
Jesus Commissioned & Sent out the 12 with Authority Matthew 10:1-4 1 And when He had called His twelve disciples to Him, He gave them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all kinds of sickness… 2 Now the names of the twelve apostles are these: first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew… James… and John his brother; 3 Philip and Bartholomew; Thomas and Matthew… James… 4 Simon… and Judas Iscariot…
Jesus Sent out the 12 with Authority Matthew 10:16-20 16 Behold, I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. 17 But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils and scourge you in their synagogues. 18 You will be brought before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them and to the Gentiles.
Jesus Sent out the 12 with Authority Matthew 10:16-20 19 But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; 20 for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.
Sent out Ones – Hated & Persecuted Matthew 10:21-23 21 Now brother will deliver up brother to death, and a father his child; and children will rise up against parents and cause them to be put to death. 22 And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But he who endures to the end will be saved. 23 When they persecute you in this city, flee to another. For assuredly, I say to you, you will not have gone through the cities of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
Sent out Ones – Hated & Persecuted Matthew 10:24-31 24 A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. 25 … If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more will they call those of his household! … 28 And do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul. But rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.
Sent out Ones – Hated & Persecuted Matthew 10:24-31 29 Are not two sparrows sold for a copper coin? And not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. 30 But the very hairs of your head are all numbered. 31 Do not fear therefore; you are of more value than many sparrows.
Sent out Ones – Hated & Persecuted • Jesus did not remove relational conflict in this age, but promised opposition (10:34). He taught that people must love one another, but they must love Him more. All relationships in this age will be tested, even family relationships.
Sent out Ones – Hated & Persecuted Matthew 10:34-38 34 Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. 35 For I have come to “set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law” 36 and “a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.”
Sent out Ones – Hated & Persecuted Matthew 10:34-38 37 He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. 38 And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.
Jesus Commissioned & Sent out the 70 WITH AUTHORITY Luke 10:1-11 1 … the Lord appointed seventy others… and sent them two by two before His face into every city and place where He Himself was about to go… 3 “I send you out as lambs among wolves… 5 But whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house’...
Jesus Commissioned & Sent out the 70 WITH AUTHORITY Luke 10:1-11 7 And remain in the same house, eating and drinking such things as they give, for the laborer is worthy of his wages… 9 Heal the sick there, and say… ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ 10 But whatever city you enter, and they do not receive you… say, 11 ‘The very dust of your city… we wipe off against you…’”
The 70 marveled by the authority that they had in Jesus name Luke 10:17-20 17 Then the seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us in Your name.” 18 And He said to them, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven.
The 70 marveled by the authority that they had in Jesus name Luke 10:17-20 19 Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. 20 Nevertheless do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rather rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”
The Blessings of Revelation Luke 10:21-24 21 … Jesus rejoiced in the Spirit and said, “I thank You, Father…You have hidden these things from the wise [in man’s eyes]…and revealed them to babes [in man’s eyes]… 22 All things have been delivered to Me by My Father, and no one knows who the Son is except the Father… 23 Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see; 24 for… many prophets and kings have desired to see what you see… and to hear what you hear, and have not heard it.”
Jesus Commissioned & Sent Out You with Authority (Yeshua’s ministry Continues) Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV) 16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. .
Jesus Commissioned & Sent Out You with Authority (Yeshua’s ministry Continues) Matthew 28:16-20 (NIV) 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
