MISSION • Detector Laboratory supports Finnishresearch on experimental collider-based particle physics • Detector Laboratory is a joint effort between Helsinki Institute of Physics HIP and University of Helsinki, Department of Physics • Within resources, Detector Laboratory also offers support for the projects of other users HIP Detector Laboratory October 2008

PREMISIES Premises consist of the large main laboratory and three clean rooms (85 m2+ 85 m2+ 10 m2). The Lab possesses equipment for R&D, assembly, testing and quality control of microstructures (bonders, probe station, environmental chamber, profilometer etc). HIP Detector Laboratory October 2008
ACTIVITIES • Currently the Detector Laboratory hosts projects related to the recently launched LHC-collider at CERN, Switzerland (CMS & TOTEM experiments). • The Laboratory also hosts module construction and bonding projects, coordinated by HU Department of Physics. • The Laboratory will hosts a project related to the future FAIR collider at GSI at Darmstadt, Germany (NUSTAR experiment). 6 HIP Detector Laboratory October 2008
CERN LHC TOTEM activity: Assembly of GEM detectors TOTEM experiment aims for studying total cross sections, elastic scattering and diffraction dissociation of proton-proton collisions at extreme accelerator energies. The TOTEM experiment will be integrated with CMS. A total of 40 GEM (Gas Electron Multiplier) modules assembled at the Detector Laboratory. The project involves ultrasonic cleaning, optical imaging of the foil defects and leakage current measurements of the foils prior to assembly. The assembly itself requires multiple manual steps from aligning and gluing to curing leading eventually to final acceptance tests. Eija Tuominen HIP Detector Laboratory October 2008
CERN LHC CMS activity: Cosmic Muon Rack (FinnCRack) FinnCRack is a reference telescope based on CMS Tracker silicon strip detectors and measuring tracks of incoming cosmic particles. Mechanics, power supplies and trigger electronics for FinnCRack was designed and constructed by HIP physicists @ CERN. FinnCRack and its cooling system are operational atHelsinki Detector Laboratory. FinnCRack is a test station 1) providing real data for the testing of the TOB functionality, 2) for the development of CMS software, 3) for the detector R&D needed for LHC upgrade. GSI FAIR activity: TPC-GEM Finland has joinedFAIR (Facility for Antiproton and Ion Research),acollider to be built at GSI (Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung) at Darmstadt, Germany. Time Projection Chamber (TPC) prototype for FAIR PANDA experiment has been designed, built and tested at the Laboratory.
