Basic Information about FERA • The Federal Emergency Relief Administration • Three fourths of families’ heads were unemployed and on relief. • The FERA had 3 primary objectives: Adequacy of relief measures; providing work for unemployed people on the relief rolls; and diversification of relief programs. • The FERA was made and passed in 1933 and the government only had enough money for 2 years because then it would expire, but if it was very successful, then they would extend the FERA.

FERA’S unsuccess • FERA wanted to prevent people from suffering and wanted to “maintain minimum standard of living.” • It was not successful because their too many people suffering and not enough help to go around. • FERA tried to get multiple organizations to help with the relief, but those organizations weren’t capable of

FERA’S success • The FERA was successful because it was able to provide over 20 million people with jobs. • Types of jobs: street construction, sewer laying and bridge building projects, playfield and park grounds improvements, public building and school repair, landscaping, land clearing, wood cutting, and landslide prevention, ditching, judging, establishment of FERA offices and stores, furniture, tool and stove repair, sewing, clothing distribution, shoe and boot repair, toy-making shops, etc.
