Features of an Optical Drive By Isaiah Logan
What is it? • All computers have an optical drive, and it’s called an optical drive because it’d a disk drive that reads information optically using a Low-power laser. • The most popular optical drive is CD-ROM
Why is it important? • Optical Drives are storage devices and part of the Storage subsystem in computers. They are used as an important factor when installing in running software, since most software is distributed on optical disks (CD-ROM).
What does it do? • The Optical drive interfaces the standard IDE/ATA controller port on the motherboard.
Features? • Glad you asked. • Besides the usual one sided use of drives recently they’ve been upgraded to Dual sided (2x 750 mb) • They also have a writing mechanism using software for DVD or CD filenames, they can either be normal (same as computer filenames) or a system called jolliet filenames. • The last feature is called “Overburn” which allows for instance a 750 mb disc to have 775 mb of data.
Questions • What are 2 types of Disk media used today? • How does an Optical drive read data? • What is the term for charging a optical drive over its allotted storage space?
Answers • 1.Blu-Ray, Compact Disc, DVD • 2. Using low-end lasers • 3. Overburn
