MTV News • The news division of MTV. • Began in the late 1980’s with the program, The Week in Rock. • First started only with music news around the world. • Soon began to cover political news starting with the 1992 presidential elections.
“Choose or Lose” • MTV campaign that started with the 1992 elections. • Encouraged up to 20 million people to register to vote. • Hosted a town hall forum for Bill Clinton. • Showed debates about important issues such as gay rights, terrorism, education, and the war.
“Vote or Die” • MTV worked with P. Diddy on his Vote or Die campaign. • Encouraged young people to vote. • Many other celebrities who supported the campaign were shown on MTV to convince viewers to register to vote… • Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, 50 Cent.
“Fight For Your Rights” • Annual Campaign promoted by MTV. • Began in the 1990s and appeared again in the early 2000s. • Slogan – “Speak Out/Stand Up Against Violence.” • Goal is to make young people aware about America’s issues with violence, drugs, and crime.

Hate Crimes Awareness Campaign • 2001 campaign to promote awareness. • MTV stopped regular programming on April 6, 2001 for 24 hours. • Aired the movie, Anatomy of a Hate Crime, based on the true story of the 1998 murder of a gay college student. • After, MTV held a discussion on the movie and later showed names of hate crime victims.
The War in Iraq • MTV hosted a debate with candidates Hilary Clinton and Barack Obama to discuss their views on the war. • On the MTV website, there is a page dedicated to the war in Iraq where people can get updates, read articles, and look at pictures.
