  1. MTV killing America Brian Skarda

  2. What is MTV? • MTV stands for Music Television. MTV was created, and owned by Viacom, originally to show music videos, selected and aired by people that were called VJ’s, sort of like a DJ at a party. • MTV first aired on August 1st, 1981. • There have always been arguments about MTV and how it was used and how it influenced the children watching it. • At first these arguments started with MTV devaluating the importance of music, and then later to the more serious argument about how MTV is ruining our society and corrupting the children of America.

  3. MTV is ruining America • MTV is without a doubt influencing the young adults and others who watch it in a horrible way. • MTV is promoting pro-sex, pro-choice, drug culture as said by AFA (American Family Association). • MTV is also a channel with an incredible amount of foul language and implied sexual content. • “MTV's reality shows had more sexual content than the music videos.  In 66 hours of reality programming, PTC analysts recorded 833 segments containing sexual content, or 12.6 scenes per hour.  Within those 833 segments, there were 905 visual depictions of sexual activity and 917 verbal references” (http://www.parentstv.org/ptc/publications/reports/mtv2005/main.asp) • The scary part about all of this is how young the people are that watch MTV and how often they watch it, as stated in the PTC’s study on MTV, “MTV is the most recognized network among young adults ages 12 to 34, according to Nielsen Media Research. It is watched by 73% of boys and 78% of girls ages 12 to 19. Boys watch for an average of 6.6 hours per week and girls watch for an average of 6.2 hours per week.” (http://www.heritage.org/press/commentary/ed031805a.cfm) • (http://www.parentstv.org/ptc/publications/reports/mtv2005/main.asp)

  4. Sexual content on MTV • Again the PTC’s study on MTV’s spring break program had made a disgusting and incredible find, “In 171 hours of MTV programming, PTC analysts found 1,548 sexual scenes containing 3,056 depictions of sex or various forms of nudity and 2,881 verbal sexual references. That means that children watching MTV are viewing an average of 9 sexual scenes per hour with approximately 18 sexual depictions and 17 instances of sexual dialogue or innuendo. To put this in perspective, consider that in its last study of sex on primetime network television, the PTC found an average of only 5.8 instances of sexual content during the 10 o’clock hour -- when only adults are watching.” (http://www.parentstv.org/ptc/publications/reports/mtv2005/main.asp) • MTV’s spring break program is not the only time you see sexual content on their channel though, you also see it on regular programs and even hear it in the little music they play on the channel.

  5. Sexual Content Example • One Bad Trip 3/20/04 2:00 p.m.Human-sundae eating competition: Three guys lie on stage; whipped cream is placed on their legs and chests. The three girls each straddle a guy and lick the whipped cream off.Nate: “She’s eating whipped cream off some dude’s [bleeped ‘f---ing’] chest right now.”Nate: “If she goes anywhere near his junk, she is so wrong.”Next, the girls switch places and have whipped cream placed all over them, including a cherry on each breast. Guys straddle them and lick the whipped cream off. The camera zooms in close.Nate: “Some dude is about to eat [bleeped ‘s--t’] all over her body.Melissa, in a voiceover: “It’s a little bit strange having some random guy lick whipped cream off of me.” • (http://www.heritage.org/press/commentary/ed031805a.cfm)
