Government Shut-down

1. Government Shut-down In general • Spending may continue on active grants and contracts • NO budgetary or other changes that require agency approval are allowed • Expenditures made without the requisite prior approval are at risk and may not be reimbursed • Subcontractors may continue to spend FY 2013 funds. • Grants.gov is not operating – BWH RA is accepting and storing NIH grant applications.

2. NIH October Deadlines during Gov. Shut-down • R01, U01, UM1 – Monday10/7, • All K’s – Monday 10/14, • R03, R21, R33, 34, 36 – Wed.10/16 • NIH Notice states “safest course is to wait to submit any application to NIH until after operations resume and a Notice is posted.’ NOT-OD-13-126 for more information. • Grants.gov is open and accepts applications. • NIH eRA Commons is closed and will not retrieve applications from Grants.gov

3. What does this mean? • NIH applications submitted to Grants.gov will not move forward. • When Commons re-opens, applications will have a 2-day review period. • RM standard review process applies – they are receiving and holding. Send proposals to Pre Award GA for review by the posted NIH deadline. Notify GA if you want the application submitted to Grants.gov prior to re-opening of the Commons. • Reviewed applications will be submitted in order received, once Commons re-opens and new due dates are posted.

5. Office for Research Careers The ORC’s 2013 Researcher Survey is now open! ORC wants to hear from Postdocs about experiences in the lab; expectations of training ,career development and mentoring; feedback on the resources and programs offered by the ORC. 6. The ORC & CFDD invites all graduate students doing research in BWH labs to attend this Town Hall meeting. This meeting will provide a forum for the graduate student community to come together to discuss opportunities and challenges, and to give feedback on their experiences and training environment to BWH Sr. VP of Research , CFDD Director, and ORC Faculty Director. The ORC would like to know more about the BWH graduate student community. Please go to the registration page to answer a few brief questions, even if you cannot attend this Town Hall Meeting event. PIs are encouraged to spread the word to their graduate students. BWH-wide Women Residents & Fellows Roundtable October 16, 2013 4:00 - 5:30 PMShapiro Breakout Room Please join your colleagues from residency and fellowship programs throughout Brigham and Women’s Hospital for an opportunity to engage in a timely discussion on preparing women for careers in academic medicine. The program will offer participants the chance to join small roundtable discussion groups on issues such as negotiations, climbing the academic ladder, mentorship, choosing a career path, career and family balance, and leadership.  Each discussion will be led by an experienced woman faculty member. 10. HMS LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT FORPHYSICIANS AND SCIENTISTS • Joseph B. Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School • April 2 – April 4, 2014 • This course is designed for HMS and HSDM instructors, assistant professors, and associate professors who currently have responsibility for a research grant, laboratory, educational course, or clinical program. This course is intended for those in the early stages of leadership and not for chairs of departments or divisions. The goal of the course is to build on participants' knowledge base and skills to enhance their professional development as administrative leaders in academic medicine. Participants will acquire skills in institutional organization, finance, legal and regulatory issues, and the full spectrum of communication skills. Women and minorities are particularly encouraged to apply. • Faculty Eligibility Guidelines: This course is intended for HMS/HSDM faculty in the early stages of leadership, and not for chairs of departments or divisions.
