In This Lesson: Unit 1 Matter and Mass (Lesson 1 of 9) Today is Friday (!),September 13th, 2013 Pre-Class: What’s an atom?
Today’s Agenda • Pre-test/Challenge Questions • Introduction to Unit 1 • Define matter, mass, and the difference between the two.
Unit 1 • In the first unit, we will study the basics of chemistry. • Why? Why study chemistry in biology class? • Why is chemistry important? • And exactly what is chemistry, anyway?
Hiroshima & Nagasaki • August 6th and 9th, 1945:
The first vocabulary… • Matter • Anything that has mass and takes up space. • Mass • The amount of matter in an object. • Mass and weight are not the same! • Mass is the same everywhere; weight is a function of gravity. • http://www.exploratorium.edu/ronh/weight/
The first vocabulary… • Time to add to the BioScale! • For this unit, we’ll be starting small. Literally. • Let’s take a look: • http://learn.genetics.utah.edu/content/begin/cells/scale/ • Scale of the Universe
Closure: Storytime! • I’ve got a little reading passage for you. • This comes from the introduction to Bill Bryson’s A Short History of Nearly Everything. • Read the whole book if you get the chance. I’m serial.
Introduction to Chemistry Video • First, complete the worksheet to the best of your ability. • You may know all the answers or you may know none. Just be sure you attempt each one. • During the video, you will correct your work.
