The Truth…? Do we really know the truth? And if we were shown this information how would we respond?
Rock, Paper, Scissors Activity [You will have 2 minutes to win as many skittles as you can.]
My Reason why we dropped em’… “Fear of a Soviet & Chinese communist takeover!” Communism…
United States • Russia/Soviet Union
But… why are we over in Iraq & Afghanistan today?
Billy Joel has a strong interest in history. "I'm a history nut. I devour history books. At one time I wanted to be a history teacher.“ --------------------------------- “I had turned forty. It was 1989 and I said "Okay, what's happened in my life?" I wrote down the year 1949. Okay, Harry Truman was president. Popular singer of the day, Doris Day. China went Communist. Another popular singer, Johnnie Ray. Big Broadway show, South Pacific. Journalist, Walter Winchell. Athlete, Joe DiMaggio. Then I went on to 1950... It's one of the worst melodies I've ever written. I kind of like the lyrics though.”
“COLD WAR 1945-1992” This all began way back in the Post-WWII Era…in the mid-1940’s!!!
Post-WWII Era: The Cold War • The Cold War describes the tense and hostile relationship between the Soviet Union and the U.S. between 1945 and 1992. The communist government of the Soviet Union wanted to convert other countries to communism. The U.S. pledged to support free countries, or basically any country supporting capitalism, so they could resist communism. Both countries had nuclear weapons and were capable of launching a nuclear war. • Other countries took sides in this international conflict. Many Western European countries sided with the U.S. to form NATO (National Atlantic Treaty Organization) in 1949. Eastern European countries signed the Warsaw Pact and formed an alliance with the Soviet Union.
A timeline of Cold War events: 1945: Yalta Agreement1947: Truman Doctrine1947: Marshal Plan1948: Berlin Airlift1949: NATO formed1950: Korean War begins1952: US tests 1st H-bomb in Marshall Islands1953: Soviet Union tests first H-bomb1953: Korean War ends1955: Warsaw Pact organized1957: Launch of Sputnik1950s: McCarthy Hearings1961: Berlin Wall built1961: Bay of Pigs1962: Cuban Missile Crisis1963: Installation of a Hot Line1969: Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) begins1979: Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan1987: Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces Treaty1989: Berlin Wall comes down1990: Unification of East and West Germany1991: Collapse of the Soviet Union
1979: Invasion of Afghanistan …… • We want the oil! • Post WWII – lots of automobiles. • We cannot let the Communist Soviets get their hands on it! • Where is the oil?
So really…again, why are we over in there? It should be pretty clear by now!
“Support Our Troops” • Can citizens support the troops, but protest against the war? • Is it not patriotic to exercise one’s freedom of speech, even if it disagrees with others’ beliefs?
“Support Our Troops” • Can citizens support the troops, but protest against the war? • Of course we support them. We just question the validity of WHY they are there in the first place. • Is it not patriotic to exercise one’s freedom of speech, even if it disagrees with others’ beliefs?
“Support Our Troops” • Can citizens support the troops, but protest against the war? • Of course we support them. We just question the validity of WHY they are there in the first place. • Is it not patriotic to exercise one’s freedom of speech, even if it disagrees with others’ beliefs? • To me, it IS patriotic to exercise my freedom of speech!!!
“To be continued tomorrow…” Any Questions?
