  3. Special case • Remember, forget, regret • ING (something that happened before) I remember talking to him on the phone. I don’t regret telling the truth. • INFINITIVE (something that is going to happen) Remember me to talk to him. You’ll regret to tell him that.

  4. -ing form of a verb can function as a noun (subject or object of a sentence) Walking brings physical benefits. After prepositions I’m tired of telling you to be quiet. I’m looking forward to meeting him at college next year. They object to passing on the vestibular exam. VERB+ ING

  7. Verb + question word (what, where, ect) + infinitive • Ask, decide, know, remember, forget, explain, understand • He asked me how to get there. • Have you decided where to go? • She’ll tell you what to do.

  8. Want, ask, expect, help, would like, would prefer (two possible structures) I asked to see the manager. I asked him to help me. We expected to be late. We expected him to be late. Tell, remind, force, persuade, order, warn, invite, teach (how) (structure verb + object + infinitive) Remind me to call her tomorrow. He warned me not to touch it. Verb + object + infinitive

  9. advise – encourage – allow - permit • There are two possible structures: • Verb + ing I wouldn’t advise staying at that hotel. They don’t allow going out during the class. • Verb + object + infinitive I wouldn’t advise you to stay at that hotel. They don’t allow us to go out during the class.

  10. MAKE - LET • These verbs have the structure verb + object + bare infinitive. • Hot weather makes me feel uncomfortable. • You shouldn’t let me read the letter.

  11. Like, hate, love (both are possible) I like getting up early or I like to get up early. I love teaching or I love to teach. Would like, would love, would hate, would prefer (infinitive) I would like to live in a small city. Would you prefer to have dinner now? Infinitive or ING?

  12. Expressions + ING • There’s no use worrying about it. • There’s no point in buying that. • It’s (not) worth reading this article. • I have difficulty finding a new house. • It’s a waste of time reading this book.
