  1. Foreshadowing • The use in a literary work of clues that suggest events that have yet to occur. • This technique helps to create suspense, keeping readers wondering what will happen next.

  2. Suspense • A feeling of uncertainty about the outcome of events in a literary work. • Writers create suspense by raising questions in the minds of their readers.

  3. Imagery • The descriptive or figurative language used in literature to create word pictures for the reader. • These pictures, or images, are created by details of sight, sound, taste, touch, smell,or movement.

  4. Mood • Mood, or atmosphere, is the feeling created in the reader by a literary work or passage. • The mood is often suggested by descriptive details. • Often mood can be described in a single word, such as lighthearted, frightening, or despairing.
