  5. Imperialism • Imperialism = the policy of extending authority and control over another territory or country • Creating an empire • Age of Imperialism: 1850s-1910 • Imperializers: USA, Great Britain, France, Germany, Belgium • Imperialized: Asia, Africa, Latin America

  6. Shifts in Thought • The Industrial Revolution increased wealth • The Industrial Revolution stripped Europe of most of its raw materials • To remain prosperous, countries needed a supply of raw materials for their factories • To remain economically and politically powerful, it was best if the Europeans conqueredthe other lands

Reasons for Imperialism • EconomicsAfrica was a source for cheap materials to be used in factories AND a new market of customers to purchase goods made in Europe • CompetitionCountries could become more powerful if they had colonies in Africa • Religion and MoralsIt was a European duty to civilize those less fortunate

The Scramble for Africa! • European countries have a “mad dash” to annex territory in Africa: • Britain: the largest Empire • France, Germany, Belgium, Holland, Portugal and Spain also had territory in Africa • Berlin Conference: Met in 1884 to divvy up land • Redrew the map of Africa • African Kings were NOT invited

  14. “The White Man’s Burden” • Europeans were offended by the “uncivilized” people they thought lived in Africa • Some Europeans saw it as their duty to “save” the “uncivilized” Africans • Goal: bring civilization to a “savage” continent

Today’s Work: Imperialism Stations • Work silently and independently to complete the three stations • Station 1: Under the announcements board • Station 2: By the data wall • Station 3: Complete at your desk • You do not need to complete the stations in order • You must turn in your completed packet by the end of class today • When you have finished, begin your homework OR study on StudyBlueYou may only listen to your music if you have reached this point

Types of Imperialism • Direct rule: local rulers were replaced with officials from the “mother country” • Colony: completed controlled by the “mother country” • Protectorate: depend on the “mother country” for protection • Sphere of Influence: the “mother country” had exclusive trading rights • Indirect rule: local rulers were allowed to maintain their positions of authority and status

  27. Imperialism in China • Chinese: very excluded • Did not feel that the Americans could teach them anything • Ancient culture, known for art and learning • Unindustrialized (no factories) • Chinese are unable to resist Western advances • China has cheap workers, HUGE market for European goods

  29. Imperialism in India • British East India Trading Company • Ruled India like a colony • Built telegraphs, railroads, water systems, postal service and schools • Organized a large army of Indian soldiers, sepoys • Resented Western interference
