CNS Stimulants • Drugs that temporarily increase alertness and wakefulness Side Effects: • Cheerfulness • Talkative • Loss of Appetite • Sleep Difficulty • Frequent Urination • Severe Withdrawal
CNS Stimulants Examples of Stimulant Drugs: • Cocaine/Crack • Caffeine • Diet Pills • Ritalin • Adderall • Energy Drinks
CNS Stimulants & Teens • Cocaine users spend their lives chasing the high they got the 1st time • Energy drinks are often abused by teens and cause similar effects • Stimulants in high amounts can cause heart palpitations or irregular beats, leading to cardiac arrest
CNS Depressants • Highly addictive drugs that slow down the CNS and heart Side Effects: • Lethargy or sleepiness • Excessive Sleeping • Lack of Concentration • Quick Addiction • Strong Withdrawal Symptoms
CNS Depressants Examples of Depressant Drugs: • Alcohol • Sedatives • Sleep aids • Rohypnol (date rape)
CNS Depressants & Teens • 40-50% of traffic fatalities are alcohol related! • Mixing depressants with other medications or drugs can be fatal • Withdrawal from some depressants can be fatal and requires medical supervision
Hallucinogens • Drugs that are meant to distort a person’s senses and alter their perception of reality Side Effects: • Psychological Effects and Hallucinations • Brain Damage • Difficulty Concentrating • Violent Reactions
Hallucinogens Examples of Hallucinogens: • LSD • Crystal Meth • Ecstasy • Shrooms
Hallucinogens • Users can permanently remain in that distorted sense of reality after just one use • Flash backs can occur years after use has stopped • Users can inflict violence on self and others
Opiates • Narcotic drugs that are taken to relieve or control pain Side Effects: • Euphoria • Drowsiness • Lack of pain/problems • Lack of attention • Lack of appetite
Opiates Examples of Opiates: • Heroin • Morphine • Vicodin • Tylenol
Opiates • Users develop a quick addiction because their emotional problems are also relaxed • Often used at “pharm parties” as pills to mix with other drugs or alcohol
Inhalants • Drugs administered by breathing in vapors of chemical solvents Side Effects: • Drowsiness • Impaired judgment • Nosebleeds/sores • Dizziness • Feeling Intoxicated • Flu-like Symptoms
Inhalants Examples of Inhalants: • Aerosol cans • Glue • Paint Thinner • Anything with Toxic Fumes
Inhalants & Teens • Although overall drug use in teens is decreasing, use of inhalants is increasing • Teens think it is harmless and try it even if they wouldn’t normally try drugs.
