  1. Lesson 6-2Pages 270-274 Using Proportions Lesson Check 6-1

  2. What you will learn! • How to solve proportions. • How to use proportions to solve real-world problems.

  3. Vocabulary

  4. What you really need to know! A proportion is an equation stating that two ratios are equal.

  5. What you really need to know! You can use cross products to solve a proportion.

  6. Example 1: Determine whether the pair of ratios form a proportion.

  7. ? No! 2 x 20 = 40 3 x 12 = 36

  8. Example 2: Determine whether the pair of ratios form a proportion.

  9. ? Yes! 0.8 x 8 = 6.4 2 x 3.2 = 6.4

  10. Example 3: Solve each proportion.

  11. c = 21.6 15c = 36•9 15c = 324

  12. Example 4: Solve each proportion.

  13. v = 5 4.8v = 16•1.5 4.8v = 24

  14. Example 5: An architect builds a model of a building before the actual building is built. The model is 8 inches tall and the actual building will be 22 feet tall. The model is 20 inches wide. Find the width of the actual building.

  15. 8•n = 22•20 8n = 440 n = 55 feet

  16. Example 6: The Circleville Pumpkin Show in Circleville, Ohio, boasts the world’s largest pumpkin pie. The pie weighs 350 pounds and is 5 feet in diameter. Find the diameter of the pie in centimeters if 1ft = 30.48 cm.

  17. 1•n = 30.48•5 1n = 152.4 n = 152.4 cm
