  1. Community Bible Study Lesson 24 Isaiah 52:13 – 53 :12 Community Bible Study Lesson 2 – Romans 1: 1-17 September 2, 2014 Community Bible Study Lesson 5 – Romans 2:17 – 3:20 September 23, 2014 Community Bible Study Lesson 16 Mark 14

  2. “We are all guilty” Lesson # 5 – Romans 2:17 – 3:20 Summary sentence: Paul informs the Jews that they are sinners like the Gentiles despite their special privileges, including their sacred rite of circumcision; no man can become righteous by following the law.

  3. Introduction Leonard Sweet’s comment – “a lot of people miss heaven by 17 inches” Despite the Jews’ possession and knowledge of the law and despite their religious ceremonies and practices like circumcision they still fall short of God’s holy standard of righteousness The Jews are sinners just like the Gentiles

  4. Central Message The law is powerless to make us right with God; rather, it identifies our sinfulness!

  5. Paul warns the Jews that they are not following the law they possess and explains who a real Jew is. 2: 17-29 • Possession of, knowledge of, and even teaching the law don’t make men right with God! • Outward religious practices like circumcision don’t make men right with God! • So who is a real Jew? What is real circumcision?

  6. Paul argues that the Jews’ faithlessness doesn’t nullify God’s faithfulness or justice and he uses Old Testament scripture to confirm that no man meets God’s law. 3: 1-18 • What is the law (nomos)? • No man can meet the requirements of the law, no not even one!

  7. God’s righteousness is analogous to due north • The heathen are headed directly opposite from God – due south • The people most resistant to the universal charge that all men are unrighteous are the people heading NNW and NNE – good people but not good enough

  8. Paul explains that the law points out our sin, making us accountable to God, but no man can be justified by works of the law. 3: 19-20 • The law is good - it points out our sin and makes us accountable to God! • The law is powerless; the gospel is powerful!

  9. The powerless law versus the power of the gospel • The law was a written code only; the gospel is the incarnate Word of God, Jesus Christ. • The law has no life; the gospel is alive in the form of the Son and Holy Spirit. • The law can’t change you; the gospel can transform you. • The law tells you what you can’t do; the gospel lifts you up into the mighty arms of God.

  10. Tonight’s Aim That you will choose to fully understand how sinful you are and how righteous God is such that you grab hold of and share the power of the gospel of Jesus Christ!
