Exam question 1 Why did the gulf between the Allies widen in the years 1943–46? (12 marks) By ‘gulf’, this question means the gap between the Allies (ie. the USA and USSR). In other words, it means ‘why did the USSR and USA move further apart?’ Plan your answer first: make a bullet pointed list of the 3 reasons you’re going to write about. Use your classwork to help you. Pick the ones you can write a few sentences about. Now write a paragraph to explain each of your 3 reasons. To get a decent mark, you must make sure you explain how/why each reason led to the gulf widening. It’s a good idea to end each paragraph with the words “this led to the gulf widening because…..” For an A grade, finish with a conclusion – which reason was the most important, and why? Write a few sentences explaining your decision. For an A* grade, you must explain how your reasons are linked to each other, as well as which one was the most important and why.
