People working with this project HCI-people • PsT Veikko Surakka • Fm Timo Partala • PsM Anne Aula • Fm Poika Isokoski • Psyk. yo Maria Jokiniemi • Psyk. yo Marko Illi Signal analysis people • Prof. Martti Juhola • Fil. yo Jouni Laakso
Contents • Introduction • What are emotions? • Perceptually intelligent machines • Affective Computing • About the measurement • Demonstrations and proposals for NIT-course
WHAT IS AN EMOTION? A reaction including following components • Brain activation • e.g. amygdala • Muscle activation • Face, voice • Emotional experience • Joy, sadness, etc. • Behavioral change • Approach/avoidance
EMOTIONS AFFECT SIGNIFICANTLY TO HUMAN • Information precessing • Memory • Thinking • Health • Interaction • ALTOGETHER TO HUMAN RATIONAL BEHAVIOR
AFFECTIVE COMPUTING, EMOTIONAL COMPUTER • Future generation flexible, learnable, and emotionally responsive user interfaces • These interfaces utilize, for example, ANS activation correlates (e.g. pupil size variation) and (e.g. electric brain potentials) of the user in connecting the user with the computer
AFFECTIVE COMPUTING • It is thought that by implementing emotional processes in HCI computers could be able to same kind of rational behavior than humans • Then the computer would be able to real interaction • The interaction would be more efficient and of much better quality
MEASUREMENT • Bioelectricity based measurement • Videotechnology based measurement • These can be measured in real time • These can also be analyzed almost in real time by the computer
