  2. There are 192 million privately owned firearms in the United States • 65 million are handguns • The number of privately owned guns rises by 4.5 million per year • Gun ownership is at an all-time high • Violent crime is at a 27-year low

  3. Firearm accident deaths have been decreasing for decades. • Since 1930, the annual number decreased 76%, while the US population has more than doubled and number of firearms has more than quintipled.

  4. Firearm accident rate is at an all-time annual low. • .26 per 100,000 people are killed in accidental firearm deaths. • Firearms are involved in 1% of all deaths.

  5. Some private citizens like handguns because they are easy to carry and can be used for self-defense. • Surveys show that people who use firearms in a criminal attack are less likely to be injured.

  6. 39% of households have a gun. • 1-3 million guns change hands in the secondary market each year and many of the sales are not regulated. • In 2002, 30,242 Americans died from firearm related deaths. • 33,651 Americans died in the Korean War • 56,193 Americans died in the Vietnam War

  7. 762 Americans died of an accidental firearm death in 2002. • For every firearm death in 2002, there were nearly 2 non-fatal firearm injuries. • In 2001, firearms were used to kill 6 people in New Zealand, 56 in Japan, 96 in Great Britain, 168 in Canada, 331 in Germany, and 11,348 in America.

  8. In 2003, there were only 163 justifiable homicides by private citizens using handguns. • For every time a gun is used in a home in a legally-justifiable shooting, there are 22 criminal, accidental, and suicide-related shootings.

  9. The presence of a gun in a home triples the risk of homicide in the home. • A study showed that all the direct and indirect cost of gun violence cost the nation $100 billion every year.
