  2. The U.S. Constitution The Second Amendment of the U.S. constitution states:

  3. Gun Statistics • 31,224 people die from gun violence per year • 12,632 are murdered • 100,000 people in America shot in murders, assaults, suicides, accidents, or by police intervention. • 683 children and teens kill themselves • 351 are killed by police intervention.

  4. More stats: • 3,067 children and teens die from gun violence. • 17,352 Kill themselves • 679 people are killed or injured during police interventions. • 66,768 people survive gun injuries. • 613 people are killed accidentally. • 161 children and teens are murdered daily.

  5. Myths concerning gun control • Thousands of children die each year from gun violence. This is false….. More kids die from bike accidents, swimming pools, and space heaters.

  6. Myths: • Waiting lists do not lower crime rates. There is no correlation between waiting periods and crime rate.

  7. Conflict: Gun control is a divisive topic:

  8. High Saliency: Gun control is important to the general public

  9. Political Perspectives: Technically there are only two sides to this issue: FOR Or AGAINST

  10. Liberal Stance: • Limit access to firearms • Ban them altogether • Partial banning: silencers, high capacity clips, machine guns

  11. Conservative Stance: Oppose limits. Open carry/ Concealed carry

  12. Liberal gun groups: • Brady Campaign • Federal Assault weapon ban (AWB) • Liberal Gun Owners Club

  13. Conservative groups • NRA (National Rifle Association) • The Rocky Mountain Gun Owners Group

Pork Barrel Definition of 'Pork-Barrel Politics' • A slang term used when politicians or governments "unofficially" undertake projects that benefit a group of citizens in return for that group's support or campaign donations. This spending mostly benefits the needs of a small select group despite the fact that the entire community's funds are being used.

  15. What is Gun Control • Not the ban of all weapons • Regulation of sales and control of weapons. • A umbrella term for everything gun related • Laws prohibiting use • Gun locks with every purchase

  16. Who is responsible for gun control • Government • Has the ability to restrict sales, manufacture, importation and use of firearms.

  17. Who is responsible for gun control? • Private Citizens: • Are responsible for the safe handling, education of use, and safe storage

  18. Shooting Incidents in U.S. • Columbine, CO April 20, 1999, Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold opened fire at their high school. 12 students and one teacher were killed. With 21 injured Eric and Dylan committed suicide

  19. Shooting incidents: • Meteor, WI • November 21, 2004 • Chi Vang was hunting on private property. He was confronted and he shot and killed a total of six men and wounded 3 others. • Sentenced to six life sentences without parole.

  20. Shooting incidents: • Virginia Tech • April 16, 2007 • Seung-Ho went on a rampage at a tech school • 32 dead, 17 injured. • Committed suicide • (had fantasies of Columbine)

  21. Shooting incidents • Fort Hood November 5, 2009 Nidal Malik Hasan opened fire in a medical center. Killed13, and wounded 30 Set to go to trial this year. Could face the death penalty.
