  1. Lysias and Family O Qeoj estin Megalodon

  2. Point 1 • INEXPERIENCED IN COURT • ‘oute hmeij oute ekeinoj dixh oute edikasameqa oute efugomen” – neither we nor that man went to court with someone nor did we defend a case • “apeirian” - ‘inexperience’

  3. Point 2 • GOOD CITIZIENS • “pasas… koregesantas… eisphoras eisenegxontas” – ‘they paid all the costs for the choruses, and having contributed all the property taxes’ • Popular with the jury

  4. Point 3 • WEALTHY • ‘tria talanta kai tetrakiouj kuzikhnouj kai ekaton dareikouj kai fialaj arguraj tettaraj” – three talents of silver and 40 gold coins and 100 darics and four silver cups • Polysyndaton here emphasises how much wealth his family has

  5. Point 4 • MAN OF THE PEOPLE • ‘hnagxasmai” – ‘compelled’ by the circumstances to prosecute Eratosthenes • This shows that he believes he is a member of the city and wants to protect it from the Thirty.

  9. Point 8 • UNFORTUNATE • “alla outws… exemartanon” – ‘but thus they did wrong to us because of our money’ • This shows that they have been wronged despite having done nothing wrong themselves and are being persecuted for their money.

  10. Point 9 • DESPERATE • “moi kinduneuein edokei, wj .. Apoqanein uparxontoj” ‘I decided to chance it, as death was already inevitable’ – this shows how close Lysias comes to dying at this point. • SYMPATHY
