Should they open with an interesting quote? Would it be a good idea to start the essay with a descriptive segment (describing the issue)? Transitions? Where should transitions be added? What transition words at the beginning or end of paragraphs should be changed to improve the paper? What is the Tone/attitude of the paper? What words contribute to the overall tone/attitude of the piece? Is it consistent throughout? What words should be changed or added to contribute to a consistent tone? Thesis Statement Is the thesis simple, clear, and to the point? Is the thesis too wordy or confusing? ORGANIZATION RED - SQUARE How is the paper organized? Are the reasons in the thesis supported with facts, textual evidence or quotes? Was the paper written from the planning guide? Place a red square around items in the planning guide that are not in the paper. Did the writer address the points in the thesis statement and stay on topic throughout the paper? Place a square around items that are off topic. Transitions? Do the transition words contribute to the organization of the paper (first, second, third – or, initially, on the other hand, lastly – etc.)? Place a red square around transition words that do not fit the structure and organization of the paper. SENTENCE FLUENCY BLACK - UNDERLINE Repeating words Underline the first word in each sentence. Verify that the same word has not been used more than 2 times to begin a sentence within a paragraph. Suggest a way to revise the sentences (combine sentences, delete words, etc.) Sentence Variety Underline 2 places where the author could combine sentences Underline places where the author has fragments or run on sentences. Underline places where the author uses too many simple sentences, and tell them to combine sentences in these areas.
