September 24, 2012 • Have your science journal out • Review Ionic and Covalent bonds. • Review Polarity • Polarity Comic • Hydrocarbons
What are examples of chemical reactions? • In your digestive system • Baking Soda and Vinegar • Burning a candle • Burning gasoline in a car engine
Looking closer at a burning candle • When a candle burns the wax reacts with oxygen in the air. • The wax that makes up a candle is called paraffin. • Paraffin is made up of only Carbon and hydrogen atoms. What kind of chemical bond occurs between hydrogen and carbon?
Hydrocarbons • Molecules (covalently bonded) made of ONLY carbon and hydrogen. • Paraffin is one example of a hydrocarbon- C₂₅H₅₂ • Other examples include: • Methane- CH₄ • Propane- C₃H₈ • Butane- C₄H₁₀ Notice that all of the chemical formulas contain only carbon and hydrogen.
Methane Chemical reaction. Methane is otherwise known as natural gas. Many people use it as a gas to cook with. C H4 + O2C O2 + 2H2 O
Exit Slip • What term means that covalent bonds like water share their electrons unevenly? • What has a chemical make up of only hydrogen and oxygen? Answer these two questions on a post-it note and stick them on the board on your way out.
