  9. Useful Definitions Dividend: A distribution of a portion of a company’s earnings, decided by the board of directors, to a class of its shareholders Often quoted in the “Dividends per share” Stable companies offer them to compensate to slow growth, while aggressive companies reinvest Most often annually, biannually, quarterly Security: An ownership position (stock), creditor relationship (bond), or rights to ownership (option) More on this in the future!

  23. Placing an Order Types of Actions Buy – To purchase the asset into your portfolio Sell – To get rid of an asset from your portfolio to roll over funds into new assets or remove funds from account Sell short – Selling a ‘Security’ that is not yours and Covering it in the future
  24. Placing an Order Selling Short When an order is placed…securities are borrowed from your broker and sold immediately Funds go into your account and you are required to Cover the securities in a certain time period Typically, short sales are left open for a long time You must pay the lender any dividends or rights declared during the sale Great solution if you believe the security will lose value in the future
  25. Placing an Order Margin Account A brokerage account where the broker lends the customer cash to purchase securities Can use this money as leverage Profits and losses can be magnified greatly Beware: Very risky!
  26. Placing an Order Types of Orders Market Brokers buy/sell for the current market price Therefore…no price needs to be specified Limit An order to buy or sell a set number of shares at a specified price or better A Limit Order guarantees price, but not an execution Buy Limit: Specified at a price lower than market price Sell Limit: Specified at a price higher than market price Stop Loss Similar to limit, buy or sell at a certain price Limit downside of short sell Protect existing profits
  27. Placing an Order Types of Orders Stop Limit Combines stop order (1) with limit order (2) Control when the trade takes place Risk that the stop price is reached, but the limit price is never reached and the order will never be filled Trailing Stop A Stop Loss order set at a percentage level below the market price Designed for long position
