Tentative Text/ Sources List • The Essential Shakespeare Handbook • Richard III, A History • Al Pachino’s documentary Looking for Richard • The Taming of the Shrew, A Comedy • The Ten things I Hate About You- (1999) Heath Ledger & Julia Stiles • The Taming of the Shrew- (1966), Liz Taylor & Richard Burton • Othello, A Tragedy • Some film version of that but not the BBC one with Anthony Hopkins version! • The Tempest, A Romance (?) • The Tempest (1982) • Assorted Sonnets, and maybe a poem or two.

Assignment 1- The Shakespearean Sonnet • As a class, brainstorm the characteristics of a Shakespearean sonnet on the board. • What are the characteristics of a Shakespearean Sonnet? • Individually, brainstorm on paper the reasons why you took this class. • Now, Write a Shakespearean Sonnet about it! Due Monday.

Take down their name, the quote, where they think it is from and what it means.

Tuesday, 2/8/10, Day 7 • Snowday Rituals? • Continue reading on page 22. • Reading p. 25-31 • As we read, and as a class, make a Venn diagram that compares and contrasts the modern theatre with that of Shakespeare’s day. • HW- Read p.49-53 and write an open response that explains what Shakespeare’s purposes (at least 3) were in writing most history plays. Include at least one direct quote cited in MLA.

Explain why a playwright might use such a device in a play. • Shrew intro Handbook, p. 171, p. 177-179 • HW- Shakespeare has often been called a misogynist. Define misogyny and explain how someone might come to that conclusion regarding Shakespeare.

Explain if the resolution of “Shrew” is reasonable with respect to Kate’s character. What is Shakespeare’s message in this play or is there even a message? • Evaluate and Discuss. • Then, in pairs, do the sheet “The Shrew Tamed” • HW- Write an open response that casts modern actors for the roles of Petrucio, Kate, Lucentio and Bianca. Explain why each character is appropriate for each role.

How true to the text of this play is this movie? • HW- Make a list or (other activity) of the differences between the movie that we have seen so far and the text.

  42. Friday, 4/09/10, Day 4 • How ‘bout a research project? Here’s Ms Bulis! • “Ten Things I Hate About You,” Touchstone Pictures, 1999 • View five or so minutes of the film and pause to get the obvious differences between the film and the play. • While we watch, keep an ongoing list of the corresponding characters in the play and the movie and list the less obvious differences between the plot of the two works. • HW- Create a Venn diagram for the plot of “Shrew” and “Ten Things” for what we have viewed so far.
