  2. #1 Object/Function (OF) • Scissors : cut :: shovel : dig • Hand : grasp :: teeth : bite The first part of the analogy is a noun and the second part of the comparison is a verb. The verb is something that the noun DOES, which makes it an OF analogy. Can you come up with one?

  3. #2 Part/Whole (PW) • Crab : claws :: elephant : trunk • Ounce : pound :: cent : dollar Both parts of the analogy are nouns. The second noun is part of the first noun, which is the whole. Can you come up with one?

  4. #3 Antonym (A) • Add : deduct :: ascend : descend • Fast : slow :: interesting : boring In an antonym analogy, the two items being compared are opposites of one another. Can you come up with one?

  5. #4 Synonym (S) • Annual : yearly :: fatal : deadly • Street : road :: nap : sleep In a synonym analogy, the two items being compared are the same/similar as one another. Can you come up with one?

  6. #5 Cause/Effect (CE) • Study : pass :: practice : master • Ridicule : embarrass :: exercise : healthy In a cause/effect analogy, one thing leads to another. Can you come up with one?

  7. #6 Characteristic Quality (CQ) • Inquisitive : child :: round : ball • Flat : table :: high : mountain In a characteristic quality analogy, the first part describes the second part. Can you come up with one?

  8. #7 Degree (D) • Warm : hot :: cool : cold • Hard : difficult :: simple : easy In a degree analogy, the first part is a level of the second. For example: ‘warm’ is part of ‘hot’, but is not as high of a temperature. Can you come up with one?
