Mythology: gods and goddesses. Zeus, Europa, Io and The Muses. Zeus: Lineage . Zeus has a very complicated family tree. His father is Cronus and his mother is Rhea. Brothers: Poseidon and Hades; sisters: Demeter, Hestia and Hera. married Hera and had Ares, Hebe and Hephaestus.

Zeus: Lineage • Zeus has a very complicated family tree. • His father is Cronus and his mother is Rhea. • Brothers: Poseidon and Hades; sisters: Demeter, Hestia and Hera. • married Hera and had Ares, Hebe and Hephaestus. • Zeus also had a child from his mind: Athena • Other children: twins Apollo and Artemis (from Leto), Persephone (from Demeter), Hermes (from Maia), and Aphrodite (from Dione) • Many more children came from mortals on Earth

  3. Zeus: Powers/weaknesses • Zeus is basically the supreme ruler, which meant his power was greater than any of the other divinities. • He held the thunderbolt and was in control of the weather. (Most commonly called the “Lord of the Sky”) • Zeus is a combination of many gods to make him everything the Greeks would like in a god. • he falls in love very easily, creating scandals throughout Earth and the Heavens and making Hera jealous.

Zeus: Important events • he dethroned his father, Cronus-ruler of the Titans-which is how he got his power. • Zeus was in a love affair with mortals and other goddesses. • Zeus was Athena’s only parent. It was said that he simply thought of her and she was born. • he saved Odysseus from Calypso’s island by sending Hermes • He swept out mankind once

  5. Zeus: DESCRIPTION • Zeus, in general, loved being mysterious. He always went behind Hera’s back and tried to hide his affairs. If you were to ever anger Zeus, he had the power to end your life right then and there. He always helped those in need- as long as they were committed and kindhearted of course! • He is most commonly identified by his master bolt

  6. Zeus: Symbols/Allusions • To the Greeks, Zeus was a symbol of an almighty being or a creator. He contributed to the creation of women, men and all evils and goodwill. He was sort of like a president, if you will, running the “country” from the Heavens aka his “office” • Allusion: The Pope

The Muses: Lineage • The Muses were Zeus’ 9 daughters from Mnemosyne. • Their names are Clio, Urania, Melpomene, Thalia, Terpsichore, Calliope, Erato, Polyhymnia and Euterpe. • They bore no children • The had 5 mountains which were Helicon, Pierus, Pieria, Parnassus & Olympus, but they grew up on Parnassus.

The Muses: Powers/Weaknesses • They were known as the gift to men because when they sang, they made men forget about their troubles. • They were able to tell lies and the truth believably. • They cared only for art and science, which could be considered as a weakness. • they have no known weaknesses.

  9. The Muses: Important Events • They sing and dance • They made life very fortunate for the Hyperboreans • Inspired men

  10. The Muses: Description • At first, the Muses were all accounted for as one • Clio- History • Urania- Astronomy • Melpomene- Tragedy • Thalia- Comedy • Terpsichore- Dance • Calliope- Epic Poetry • Erato- Love Poetry • Polyhymnia- Songs to the gods • Euterpe- Lyric Poetry

  11. The Muses: Symbols/Allusions • The Muses symbolize the good and bad in each person, sort of like yin and yang. • Allusion: The Sister Graces

  12. Europa: Lineage • Father: King of Sidon • Sons: Minos & Rhadamanthus • Spouse: Zeus

  13. Europa: powers/weaknesses • She is mortal • More beautiful than all the maidens

  14. Europa: important events • Zeus turned into a bull and carried her away to Crete, where he raped her • She had his sons • She suffered no pain • Her sons became the judges of the dead

  15. Europa: Description • According to Zeus, she outshined all the other maidens • Identified by the flowers she picked up

  16. Europa: Symbols/Allusions • Europa symbolizes the naïve traits in each person. • She willingly jumped on the bull without a second thought. • Allusion: Little Red Riding Hood

  17. IO: Lineage • Father: Inachus • Son: Epaphus • Descendants: He4rcules and Danaus • Spouse: Zeus

  18. Io: Powers/Weaknesses • She is a mortal • She could see Zeus’ visions • She got away from Argus

  19. Io: Important events • She was once a happy princess • Zeus fell in love with her • Hera got jealous • She sent Argus to watch over her • When she got away, Hera sent a gad-fly and Io went crazy and turned into a cow

  20. Io: Description • Happy and beautiful • Easy to be jealous of • Was a beast on a never ending journey to nowhere • Very miserable

  21. Io: Symbols/Allusions • Io symbolizes karma • Allusion: Medusa
