Louis Rules Alone • In 1660, Louis married Maria Theresa of Spain. • In 1661, Mazarin died and he announced he would rule alone. • The beginning of absolute rule. • Becomes known as The Sun King.
Reasons Behind Versailles • From 1648-1653, French nobles and commoners took part in a revolt called The Fronde. • Royal hunting cottage located in the village where Versailles now stands. • Removes him 13 miles from Paris. • Makes the nobles reside there part of the year to control them.
Creating Versailles • Over 35,000 people worked to complete it. • More than 30 years to complete. • No plumbing. • Cost over $2 billion.
The Hall of Mirrors • 17 mirrors face the 17 windows reflected the gardens.
The Hall of Mirrors Facts • The walls were covered with marble and bronze. • The hall is 73 meters long. • It is bordered at each end by two salons: The Salon of Peace and The Salon of War. • Paintings of the achievements of Louis XIV covered the walls.
The Gardens • Approximately 15,000 acres of gardens.
Garden Designs • Geometric shapes. • Perfectly trimmed. • Showed Louis XIV control over nature as well as his subjects. • Set the standard for the formal French gardens.
The Fountains • 1,400 fountains. • The fountains could not be all run at once. • They were run on special occasions. • Turned on and off as Louis passed through the gardens.
Versailles after Louis XIV • During the French Revolution, the building was saved but furniture and articles were removed. • After government use, it became a museum. • In 1919, the Germans signed the Treaty of Versailles in the Hall of Mirrors. • In 1999 a storm knocked over around 10,000 trees.
