  1. IBM Solutions MICROSOFT Solutions SECURITY Solutions NETWORK Solutions BUSINESS INTELLIGENCE Solutions Technology People. Business Results. Getting iReady for Power 7 Sept 9, 2010 Greg Kyburz gkyburz@asd.net

  2. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS Why Power 7? • Better price/performance $/CPW • Better Efficiency – Power/Cooling • Better Hardware and Software Maintenance Costs • Better space efficiency – More CPW / “U” • Maintain an upgrade path for your system • Move up to ‘i’ Incentive/User licensing incentives • Service Vouchers

  3. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS Where to Start? • OS Compatibility with Applications • Hardware Compatibility • Cost Factors – IO replacement, maintenance • Financial Status of Machine • Migration Effort / Downtime • Performance

  4. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS OS Compatibility with Applications • Power 7 requires 6.1.1 or 7.1 • May require Application upgrade prior to or after OS upgrade • ANZOBJCVN to determine whether objects are observable • http://www-912.ibm.com/a_dir/as4ptf.nsf/$$search?openform • Search on ANZOBJCVN to find the latest for your release • Can get assessment done by IBM or IBM BP • Obtain latest ‘resave’ of target release • http://www-947.ibm.com/systems/support/i/planning/resave/v7r1.html

  5. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS OS Compatibility • OS Jumping • 5.2 to 5.4 then to 6.1.1 or 7.1 (no anzobjcvn for 5.2) • 5.3 to 6.1.1 then to 7.1 • 5.4 to 7.1 • Could do reload and jump releases also /additional risk, time and $$ • Reference material for release upgrades/recovery etc. • http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0&dc=DB520&dc=D900&dc=D800&dc=DA900&dc=DA800&q1=V5R4M5+AND+AS400KBXXYYZZRCH&uid=nas1b6c5ed39e84670648625740f007c74e3&loc=en_US&cs=UTF-8&lang=all

  6. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS OS Compatibility • Release Upgrade Pre-Install Verification tool • https://www14.software.ibm.com/webapp/iwm/web/reg/download.do?source=ipvt&S_PKG=dl3&lang=en_US • GUI that will guide you through the upgrade planning and preparation process • More Doc! Getting ready for 6.1.1 and beyond! • http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpieces/abstracts/redp4293.html?Open

  7. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS Hardware Compatibility • Power 7 requires 6.1.1 or 7.1 • May Require a server firmware update on current machine to go to 5.4 or beyond • http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/slkbase.NSF/c32447c09fb9a1f186256a6c00504227/23c4789ba6f5321886256fd300586b7f?OpenDocument • May require a HMC code update also • http://www-912.ibm.com/s_dir/slkbase.NSF/DocNumber/408316083 • Partition considerations – all must be at 6.1.1 or above on P7

  8. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS Hardware Compatibility • NO HSL adapters or HSL attached towers supported on P7 • May require I/O replacement • What isn’t supported? • http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/power/hardware/sod2.html • Common things not supported on P7 • IOPs, QIC tape drives, twinax, IOP based IOAs, SCSI 10k RPM drives and drives 35Gb and smaller

  9. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS Hardware Compatibility • P5-P6 upgrades supported through year end • P6-P7 upgrades supported now • Link for all planning hw/software and release planning information • http://www-947.ibm.com/systems/support/i/planning/upgrade/futurehdwr.html#power7 • Not sure what code is required? Use the ‘prerequisite’ checker • https://www-912.ibm.com/e_dir/eserverprereq.nsf

  10. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS Cost Factors • May have to replace some/all of the current IO to go to P7 • Application Vendors may charge for SW on the new system based upon CPW not P group • Might need a new HMC • OS Licensing and 5250 Requirement • Disposal cost of old system • Economic Sales Replacement tool /Consolidate multiple servers

  11. Financial Status of Machine • Is the machine on lease? • Operating vs. Capital • Purchased? • Fully depreciated? • Lease sellback • Diminimous • If you need it you need it

  12. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS Migration/Downtime • If you are on a P5 or below – and want to maintain some of your I/O consider P6 • If you have significant amount of unsupported hardware for P7 / consider P6 • If you cant go to 6.1.1 – consider P6 • If you are on 5.2 or old hardware and can go to 6.1.1 – P7 might be a fit • If you are on P6 and want to maintain an upgrade path go to P7

  13. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS Migration/Downtime • If you want to take advantage of the P7 benefits – planning will be key • If you can go to 7.1 consider P7 • If you want the latest and greatest – go to P7 • Migration Consideration: If you are replacing disk unless you use a Mimix type product you will probably be reloading, make sure you have compatible media types on source and target machine.

  14. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS Migration/Downtime • The number of partitions will impact the downtime • Skipping releases will increase the downtime • The time to perform object conversion will effect downtime • Time for saves/restore will effect the downtime • Type of migration will impact the downtime – hardware/OS can be staged ahead of time

  15. > ADVANCED SYSTEM DESIGNS Performance • Careful planning required • In most cases CPW increases are significant • Ensure a commensurate amount of memory is added • Review I/O rates and model drive reduction with WLE or other tools • http://www-912.ibm.com/wle/EstimatorServlet • Identify and document current bottlenecks to help justify a P7
