  3. Economics • GI Bill – loans to veterans for businesses, homes, and college • Inflation • demand for goods/labor shortage • Gov steps in to help - $$$ • Taft-Hartley Act • Worked to find a solution to union & labor practices • Truman vetoes

Presidents in 1950s • Truman (Fair Deal) • Raised minimum wage • Expanded Social Security • National housing Act – 800,000 low income houses • Eisenhower (New Deal) • Business is vital to the nation • Attacked federal aid to businesses (creeping socialism) • Federal Highway Act ($25 billion for 40,000 miles)

  9. The “Other” American Life • 30 million people live below poverty line • Michael Harrington writes The Other America • Who were poor? • Single mothers • Immigrants • Rural Americans – Black and White • Urban Renewal • tried to help poor people • Created violence
