  1. Gorillas of Africa

  2. Habitat • Gorillas live in the western lowland as well as the mountain forests of Africa.

  3. What do they look like? • They are large and powerful. • Males can be five feet tall and weigh up to 350 pounds. • Females can grow to be 4 feet tall and weigh up to 200 pounds.. • They are black or brown. The dominant males can have silver backs.

  4. Behavior • Gorillas are generally peaceful and shy. • Males will beat their chests to show strength when threatened. (Gorilla Charge) http://video.nationalgeographic.com/video/player/animals/mammals-animals/apes/gorilla_lowland_odzala.html

  5. Food Habits • Gorillas are herbivores. • They eat juicy stemmed plants. • They will also eat berries, ferns, and bark. • They never eat all of the food. This allows the food to grow back quickly so that the gorillas don’t have to leave their home.

  6. The Family • The Mighty Silverback will have 10 to 15 females with babies in the family. • Younger males may try to take over. The Silverback will fight to protect his family because if the younger male takes over he usually kills the babies. 7. Endangered? • The forests are slowly being cut down. • Cattle ranches have taken over their habitat in Nigeria. • Poachers kill adults so they can sell babies to people for pets.
