Using the internet for Distance Learning in a developing country Donn Colby, MD, MPH HAIVN Harvard Medical School AIDS Initiative in Viet Nam
The Need for “localized” Distance Learning • Decentralized ART means many HCW in remote rural areas • Training and HIV experts concentrated in large urban centers • Long distances and poor infrastructure make face-to-face training expensive and time-consuming • International DL: • English Only • NEVER at a time that is convenient for East Asia
HAIVN Distance Learning Initiative • Twice monthly series of lectures provided over 12 months (Feb 2012- Jan 2013) • All lectures and slides in Vietnamese • Conducted in the afternoons when HIV clinics are less busy • Evaluated after each session
Challenges: • Keep interest and participation over time • Provide CME credit and certificates • Monitor individual participation Lessons Learned: • Importance of IT support • Use the right Software • Local Experts for lectures (have back-ups ready!) • Topics relevant to the audience
