FleetLink: Data Acquisition from Fishing Vessels • Presented at the COOA • Monthly Meeting • A.C. Bucklin, R.C. Groman, P.H. Wiebe, G. Williams • October 6, 2004
Premise • The widespread temporal and spatial distribution of commercial fishing vessels makes them ideal platforms from which to gather basic information for coastal monitoring, modeling, and prediction.
Approach • A partnership of commercial fishermen, entrepreneurs, researchers, educators, and federal agency representatives
Participants • Bucklin, A. – UNH • Commercial & Non-Commercial Vessels • Anderson, E. F/V Kris N Kev • Leary, M. F/V Lori B • McLellan, C. F/VAdventurer • Pendleton, M. F/VSusan&Caitlyn • UNH, R/VGulf Challenger • WHOI, R/V Tioga • Williams, G. – Clearwater Instrumentation, Inc. • Groman, R. – WHOI • Wiebe, P. - WHOI
Long Term Goal • One hundred or more fully-instrumented fishing vessels, which provide enhanced oceanographic and meteorological data collection capacity for coastal and offshore areas throughout the NW Atlantic.
Initial DevelopmentBegan in 1998 • On-board PC and Wheelhouse software (MIT) • Serial interfaces to sea surface temperature and meteorological sensors (Clearwater Instrumentation) • Telemetry to WHOI data server (WHOI)
Current Efforts • Gary’s presentation.
Web Accessible • Uses JGOFS/GLOBEC data management system • www.fleetlink.net • Supports plotting and downloading
