The Basic Assumptionsof Cognitive Science • Information is represented inside the head • Information is represented in some sort of code • Information can be manipulated HKU
Basic Assumptions • There are rules (logical or otherwise) by which information is manipulated or processed. • Information can be stored (memory), retrieved, changed, communicated and turned into action. HKU
What are representations for? • Increase chances of survival • They are about the world HKU
The brain is as complex as anything we know • three pounds • 20 billion neurons • 1 trillion connections (1,000,000,000,000) • works in parallel • needs to be studied when it’s on HKU
Cognitive Science is a basic science • Like chemistry, physics, or biology • The activities of the nervous system can be analysed at different levels • All the levels are relevant and are not reducible HKU
