Not Ashamed Co For I Am Of the Gospel
Part 16 In Christ…No Condemnation Romans 7:25-8:11
There is therefore now no condemnation…Rom. 8:1a • We have now come to arguably the greatest chapter in the entire Bible. One of the men I admire, Ken Rudolph, put it this way, if he were stranded on a desert island with only one chapter in the entire Bible he would choose Romans 8. One could study and probe the width and breadth of Romans 8 for a lifetime. For the purpose of our study, we are breaking Romans 8 down into 5 bite-size pieces that focus on our new identity that is found in Christ. We’ve broken it down this way:
Romans 7:25-8:2 25 I thank God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin. 1 There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
In Christ our condemnation was replaced by a new desire to walk in obedience to the Spirit of God • You have been given a new desire to please God • You have been given a new desire to be free from sin’s hold • Illustration: The joys and transformed desires of parenthood
Romans 8:3-4 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.
In Christ our condemnation was paid by the perfect blood of Christ Jesus (3-4) • In Christ, the requirements of the law were perfectly kept • In Christ, the law’s inability to save was replaced by Christ’s ability to save • In Christ, sin’s condemnation was conquered and Christ’s forgiveness and salvation were offered • In Christ, we were freed from sin’s bondage and given a freedom to pursue righteousness and life with reckless abandon Illustration: Tight Rope vs. Race Track
Romans 8:5–11 5 For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. 6 For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7 Because the carnal mind is enmity against God; for it is not subject to the law of God, nor indeed can be. 8 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God.
Romans 8:5–11 9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you.
In Christ our condemnation was removed by the Holy Spirit who indwells and imparts life • In Christ you set your mind on Spiritual things • In Christ you can now please God • In Christ you have the indwelling Spirit as proof that you are God’s • In Christ you have life Illustration: Energizer Bunny
BIG IDEA: In Christ We AreNEVER Condemned There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. Romans 8:1
