  1. “I am Not Ashamed…” Romans 1:16 Sermon #3 “Righteous!”

  2. What are We Doing? We are looking through the first 8 chapters of Romans to see Paul’s connection to the Good News and to consider our connection as well.

  3. “Gospel” = Good News What would you say is the “gospel” message? How would you define it? The good news is that the separation that sin causes between us and God can be repaired by the grace of God through turning from wrong, choosing to do right, and showing surrender to Christ as the leader of your life by dying to your old life, being buried in water, and being raised to a new life of obedience to God and His word.

  4. Think About It: How many people in your life think, or hope, that they are right with God and how many people know for certain? How many people in your life have confidence that they are right with God and if their life ended right now they would know for certain where they would be for eternity?

  5. Restoring Purity Object Lesson! Sin Causes Separation. Restoring Purity.

  6. God Provides Righteousness God provides the purity that we need to be in relationship with him. God provides us with the righteousness that we need for relationship through Jesus life, death, burial, and resurrection.

  7. Into the Text Romans 3:1-8 Romans 3:1-8 on page 1749 answers two questions. #1 What is the value of being a Jew over a Gentile. #2 Does our filth make God’s purity look better.

  8. Romans 3:9-20 page 1750 Paul quotes several passages from the Psalms, and Isaiah to show that sin has changed us all. Verse 20 says “Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing he law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.”

  9. Romans 3:1-26 21 But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. 22 This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. We can become right with God because of what Jesus has done. Only Jesus can remove the sin that causes separation, the law could only educate us as to what sin is and how it impacts us.

  10. Romans 3:23-24 There is no difference, 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus. Justified – Just-as-if-I had… Redemption – to pay a price for freedom – related to ransom. Jesus’ death pays the price and completely removes the sin and separation.

  11. Romans 3:25 25 God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. Atonement – A change that occurs at-one-moment. The word relates to the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant where blood was sprinkled as payment for sin. When Jesus’ blood was shed the separation from sin was finally removed. God needed a perfect payment to restore relationship and so Jesus provided it which made it a just and right payment.

  12. Romans 3:25-26 He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished-- 26 he did it to demonstrate his justice at the present time, so as to be just and the one who justifies those who have faith in Jesus.

  13. Jesus’ willing death on the cross restored the relationship that sin separated.

  14. Being Certain We can be certain that God has removed the penalty of sin because of his grace. God does not force his grace upon us and he allows us to choose to accept or deny his grace. We connect to the saving grace of God through our death to the old life, burial in water, and resurrection to a new life with Jesus as our leader.

  15. Taking It Home Take time to thank God this week for his grace of salvation and his daily grace. Take grace seriously by choosing to deal with a sin in your life head on. Make a plan as to how you are going to overcome a temptation that you too often fail. Be more forgiving of others when their sin impacts you. Be on your guard against hypocrisy. Hold yourself to the same standards. Invite someone this week to accept the righteousness that God is providing.
