Welcome to 2nd Grade!Let’s Rock n’ Roll! Ms. Robertson Room 512
All About Me • My background • I was born and raised in Memphis, TN. I currently reside in the Bartlett/Arlington area. • I attended the University of Tennessee in Knoxville, where I received a Bachelor’s degree in English, with a focus in Creative Writing. I also received my Master’s degree in Elementary Education from UT. • My experience • I interned in a Kindergarten classroom for 1 year and spent 6 weeks in a 4th grade classroom (in Roane County, TN). • This is my 4thyear teaching and my 3rdyear at Atoka Elementary.
My Family • Most of my family lives in Memphis. • I have a sister (26) who works in marketing, a mother (a Kindergarten teacher at Lausanne Collegiate School), and a father, who is a computer engineer at FedEx. • I have a dog named Bentley, who is 5.
My Goals • To give your child the academic and social skills they need to progress to 3rd grade. • To provide a supportive and fun classroom environment. • To help your child make new friends and discover new interests.
Grades • Letter grades are given for the following 2nd grade subjects: • Reading • English • Math • Science and social studies are integrated and receive participation grades. (This will change in 3rd grade) • This year Spelling will not be a separate grade from other Language Arts subjects, which is a change from last year.
Classroom Community • Our classroom is a community. In our community, we have rules to help us get along with each other. • Our class rules are: • Mutual respect • Attentive listening • No put downs • Personal best
Homework • I will assign homework each week. This includes 20 minutes of reading which should be done 7 days a week. • Homework packets can be found in the homework pocket of your child’s ROCKSTAR binder. • All homework packets go home on Monday and are due on Friday morning.
Accelerated Reader • Please read with your child every night. When your child reads, please write down the date, title and author in the Reading Log in their ROCKSTAR binders. • When your child has read a book at least 2-3 times fluently he/she is ready to take an AR test. They should read books at their personal reading level so the tests will also be at their level. • I will let your child know what level books are appropriate for them. I will also let them know when they may switch to only reading a book twice to test.
Tardiness • School starts at 7:50 A.M. • If your child isn’t in the classroom by this time, please check in at the school office before coming to class. • Four tardies = one absence • Checking out early from school counts as a tardy.
Snack • We will have snack every day around 9:15-9:30. Please send a snack with your child each day if they wish to have one. • Snack cart will begin running soon on Friday mornings. You may either send a snack on Fridays or send money for your child to purchase one from snack cart.
How Can I Be Involved? • Classroom tasks – cut out lamination, sort/staple papers together, etc. • Help with morning car line • TRACK Day volunteers (once per quarter) • Fall Carnival volunteers • Book Fair volunteers • Field Trip chaperones • PTO • Help with class parties • Parents who want to help by working directly with students (reading buddies, etc.) will need to meet with Dr. Byrd.
Lunch • Please send checks or cash to school to cover your child’s lunch (and breakfast, if applicable). Charging is strongly discouraged. • It is easiest to send the money at the beginning of the week (or month). There is a zipper pocket in their ROCKSTAR binder where you can put the money. • Please put all money in an envelope or Ziploc bag that is labeled with their name and the purpose of the check/money.
Lunch Visitors • You are encouraged to have lunch with your child after cafeteria procedures have been practiced for a couple of weeks. • If you come to have lunch with your child, please sign in at the front office and then you may head on to the cafeteria where we will meet you.
Headphones • Every child needs his/her own pair of headphones. You can find inexpensive ones at the Dollar Tree, Big Lots, Family Dollar, and Fred's. • We use these in 2 of our workstations in class, and they are required for computer class. • These may need to be replaced at some point during the year.
Miscellaneous • Checks: Please write your child's name and my name in the "memo" section of your check. Always make it out for the exact amount. • If sending money for two different things, please remember to send two separate checks. • When sending cash, please send exact change as we are not allowed to make change.
ROCKSTAR Binder • I want to introduce you to your ROCKSTAR binder. • ROCKSTAR is an acronym for: Really Organized Children Keeping Stuff Together, Always Ready! • Your child is required to take this binder home every afternoon and is also responsible for bringing it back to school in the mornings. • It has several sections to help all of us stay informed.
Let’s Have a Great Year! • Any questions??
