  1. Welcome to 7th grade GT ELA Mrs. Langford

  2. Summer Reading • Rising 7th grade students will be responsible for reading two books: • Nonfiction: Wicked History book • Fiction: Matched by Ally Condie • Specific assignments will be given for each book. • Vital that summer reading assignments are completed- this is the beginning unit for next year.

  3. Nonfiction • Choose one of the Wicked History books. • After completing the book, present the information in a creative way. • Fake Facebook page, wanted poster, timeline, etc. • Must be visual.

  4. Fiction • After reading the book, create a postcard for your new teacher. • Front- picture representing a scene in the book. • Back- paragraph answering one of three questions.

  5. Grading • Grading scale remains the same from 6th grade to 7th grade: A= 100-93 B= 92-85 C= 84-77 D= 76-70 F= below 70 Students that fail a GT class will still fail the 7th grade and have to repeat the grade level. • What changes from 6th to 7th is the level of work and intensity of work required of each student.

  6. Class Novels Complete between 4 and 6 class novels a year. Bulk of the reading is done outside of class. Schedules given to show students when they should be at each reading check-point. Students will be expected to discuss and analyze their reading in class. Grades come from classwork, reading checks, quizzes, tests, and novel based projects.

  7. Independent Reading Students are still expected to keep up with independent reading while working on class novels. Independent reading time given in class. Meant to help students foster their own interests and develop a love for reading whatever they like.

  8. Writing Like reading, a majority of writing will be done outside of class. Teach a concept- students display understanding of that concept. Time will be given in class, but students will need to work on assignments outside of class also.

  9. Projects Another major shift is the type of projects given. No longer asked to complete basic reports. Critical thinking projects, textual based projects, creative thinking projects. Expect one per quarter.

  10. Assessment • Assessments will not be based on memorization of facts. • Analysis using skills taught • Real world application • Deeper thinking with open-ended questions

  13. Administrative Rule for Mathematics Honors/AP The Honors Mathematics Program is a seven year program for accelerated mathematics students. To remain in the honors program students must: Maintain a final grade of C or above Score exemplary or met on PASS (most recent available score) Pass the exit exam

It is important for students, parents, teachers, and administrators to understand that entering the first stage of the Honors/Advanced Placement program in grade six does not automatically guarantee a continued placement in the honors program.

Characteristics of GT Students A sense of personal and social responsibility sufficient to keep up with the individual workload and to contribute meaningfully to group efforts The willingness to accept criticism from both their teachers and their peers The patience and perseverance to accept a variety of answers or unresolved questions as starting points for further thinking and problem solving and exploring of ideas in works of mathematics The ability to communicate mathematical reasoning precisely and analyze peer reasoning

The ability to connect mathematical concepts to the world around them in multiple ways Focus and ability to stay on task to handle the faster pace of the honors curriculum The ability to give schoolwork priority over employment in after-school jobs or extra-curricular activities. The ability to select and use a variety of tools to assist in mathematical processes

Gifted and Talented ProgramWithdrawal/Readmission Policies and Procedures There are two types of basic conditions under which students may be withdrawn: • Conditions of a Remedial Nature • Inability to maintain adequate performance level in the gifted program • Inability to maintain adequate performance level in the regular classroom. (Applies to pull-out students only.) • Irregular attendance • Serious behavior problem • Conditions of a Non-Remedial Nature • Parental or personal desire to withdraw • Readmission into the program does not happen. • If your child is removed from the program, it is extremely difficult to be caught back up to be readmitted into the program.

After State Testing • State testing does not mark the end of 7th Grade GT Pre-Algebra. • After State Testing we cover 8th Grade Standards that are part of the GT Pre-Algebra curriculum that are not found on the 7th Grade State Standardized Test. • It is safe to assume that after State Test your child will have possibly 2 to 3 quizzes/tests yet before the final exam.
