Unavoidable physical association Associations are made between a natural stimulus and a learned, neutral stimulus Classical Conditioning
Classical Conditioning Natural Reaction Neutral Stimulus (something you don’t normally react to) Associate reaction & stimulus
Classical Conditioning - Example Feel hungry (when you haven’t eaten in awhile). 4th period class (occurs near lunch) Associate 4th period class with being hungry.
Classical Conditioning Pavlov’s Dogs • Dogs salivate when they are shown/given food. (natural stimulus) • Ring a bell before giving the dogs food. • Dogs began to salivate whenever a bell rang. (learned, neutral stimulus)
Reinforcement: something that follows a response and strengthens the tendency to repeat that response. Generalization: a behavior that spreads from one situation to another. Operant Conditioning
Positive Reinforcement: Giving a dog a treat after he sits. Praising a child for sitting still during school. Negative Reinforcement: Spraying a cat with water when they scratch the couch. Different from punishment (reinforcement must happen immediately). Operant Conditioning
