Psych DMA Please take out a piece of paper and complete the following: • Write down the vocabulary word and definition. • Choose ONE of these options and complete it. • Draw a picture that illustrates/explains the vocabulary word. • Rewrite the definition in your own words. • Write a sentence that includes the term and the information from the definition.   5. Unavoidable physical association Associations are made between a natural stimulus and a learned, neutral stimulus Classical Conditioning

  6. Classical Conditioning Natural Reaction Neutral Stimulus (something you don’t normally react to) Associate reaction & stimulus

  7. Classical Conditioning - Example Feel hungry (when you haven’t eaten in awhile). 4th period class (occurs near lunch) Associate 4th period class with being hungry.

  8. Classical Conditioning Pavlov’s Dogs • Dogs salivate when they are shown/given food. (natural stimulus) • Ring a bell before giving the dogs food. • Dogs began to salivate whenever a bell rang. (learned, neutral stimulus)

  10. Reinforcement: something that follows a response and strengthens the tendency to repeat that response. Generalization: a behavior that spreads from one situation to another. Operant Conditioning

  11. Positive Reinforcement: Giving a dog a treat after he sits. Praising a child for sitting still during school. Negative Reinforcement: Spraying a cat with water when they scratch the couch. Different from punishment (reinforcement must happen immediately). Operant Conditioning

  13. Social Learning • Results from viewing other people. • Observational learning • The person/animal observes and imitates the behavior of others.
