  1. The Mercy of Jesus Luke 14:1-11

  2. We are doing sermons about Jesus in the gospels. Please share about God’s heart of mercy towards rejects, outcasts and the needy.

  3. Luke 14 1 One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched. 2 There in front of him was a man suffering from abnormal swelling of his body.

  4. Luke 14 3 Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” 4 But they remained silent. So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him on his way.

  5. Luke 14 5 Then he asked them, “If one of you has a child or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull it out?” 6 And they had nothing to say.

  6. A Merciful Person will sometimes seem to “bend the rules” In life, you will encounter many situations where one good rule seems to contradict the other. If an armed intruder asks, “Who else is at home?” If someone is caught smoking on church premises?

  7. A Merciful Person will sometimes not enforce the penalty of breaking a good rule Warning note instead of a fine. A woman caught in the act of adultery (John 8) Always let love be your guide - “What is the merciful thing to do?”

  8. Luke 14 7 When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 8 “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.

  9. Luke 14 9 If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this person your seat.’ Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.

  10. Luke 14 10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’ Then you will be honored in the presence of all the other guests.

  11. Luke 14 11 For all those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

  12. A Merciful Person will often also be quite strict and willing to confront poor behaviour Jesus is full of Grace and Truth Mercy and Justice

  17. What does Peter mean when he wrote that Christ “made proclamation to imprisoned spirits”? Christ preached to those who perished during the great flood Apostles’ Creed: Crucified, Dead and Buried.. He descended into hell; On the third day, He rose from the Dead

  18. 1 Peter 4 5 But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 6 For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to human standards in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit.

  19. John 5 24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes Him who sent Me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live.

  20. John 5 • 28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice • 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned.
