The Fusion Industry Innovation Forum (FIIF) aims to enhance technological links between the fusion community and industry. It promotes innovation, competitiveness of European industry, and the involvement of European industries in fusion objectives. The forum provides advice, recommends technology transfer programs, and reviews skills development initiatives. It emphasizes industrial involvement in the design and operation of future fusion power plants.

Fusion … in line with the 2020 Innovation Union European fusion programme must therefore promote • Innovation (technologies : development and transfers) • European industry competitiveness facing a world wide competition (chiefly from Asian industry) Opportunity for a better involvement of European industries in coherence with • short terms fusion objectives • long term vision … giving credibility to the goal of a future » industrial fusion power plant » FIIF – Involvement of industry – Ph. Garderet, Garching, april 14th, 2011
A Commission initiative : the FIIF Fusion Industry Innovation Forum • to provide advice to the Commission and the CCE-FU • chair of the FIIF management Board report to CCE-FU • not to discuss the procurements for ITER • large and open dissemination of the forum activities • links with national industrial networks FIIF – Involvement of industry – Ph. Garderet, Garching, april 14th, 2011
Enhancing technological links between the fusion community and industry • Fusion objectives must continue to act as « technology inciters » through specific high performance challenges (materials, tritium …) • Industry is able to contribute as « technology provider » through high tech products and services in correlation to their larger scope of shorter-terms applications • Industry has the capability to integrate the technologies and to transform technology and innovations • in process, tools, long term collective competences • in products • in services …customers oriented and facing competition FIIF – Involvement of industry – Ph. Garderet, Garching, april 14th, 2011
Industry involvement needed … towards a fusion powerplant Really preparing a way to an « industrial plant » means : • Introducing more industrial rules quite soon in the design phase • Codes and standards • Nuclear industry constraints including safety options, licensing … • Global engineering vision (a fusion plant is much more than a Tokamak) • Design choices must take into account the industrial constraints for the operating phase • More precise ideas about industrial economic figures will progressively be necessary FIIF – Involvement of industry – Ph. Garderet, Garching, april 14th, 2011
FIIF plan of activities Provide industrial opinion, advices and proposals • Challenge the Technology road map for the power plan and Identify Critical technologies from the industrial point of view • Define and advice on a suitable technology transfer programme • Review skills development initiative according to industrial previsional specific needs FIIF – Involvement of industry – Ph. Garderet, Garching, april 14th, 2011
