Neural stem cells extracted from adult mouse hippocampus were induced to proliferate, forming neurospheres. Test compounds Harmine and Tetrahydroharmine were added to assess their capacity in promoting early and mature stages of neurogenesis. Results showed that both compounds stimulated neurogenesis in vitro.

Neurogenesis • Neural stem cells (NSC) were extracted from the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus of adult mice. • NSC were induced to proliferate → “Neurosphere” formed • Addition of Test compounds: Saline / Harmine / Tetrahydroharmine (0.5µM). • Assessment of capacity of compounds to promote: • Early stages of Neurogenesis (young neurons): TuJ1 staining (green) • Neuronal Maturation (mature neurons): MAP-2 staining (red)
