Sacrament • The inward grace is the effect or benefits the sacrament has on us Ritual action or formula of words (“form”)
Sacraments • Divided into three groups: • Initiation • Healing • Service of communion and the mission of the faithful
Sacraments of Initiation • Lay the foundation of Christian life • Baptism – We are born into a new life in Christ. Takes away original sin and makes us members of the Church. • Eucharist – Nourishes our life of faith (food for the soul). • Confirmation – Strengthens the grace of Baptism which enables us to witness to our faith
Sacraments of Healing • Celebrate the healing power of Jesus • Penance – we receive God’s forgiveness • Anointing of the Sick – unites a sick’s person’s sufferings with those of Jesus
Sacraments at the Service of Communion • Help members of the Church serve the community • Matrimony – a baptized man and women are united with each other as a sign of the unity between Jesus and his Church • Holy Orders – men are ordained priests or deacons to serve others
Who administers the sacraments? • Ordinary minister – person charged by the Church to administer the sacrament ͢ The priest is the ordinary minister for all sacraments except Confirmation. ͢ The Bishop of the diocese is the ordinary minister for Confirmation
Who administers the sacraments? • Extraordinary ministers – those charged by the Church to help in the administration of a sacrament. ͢ Confirmation – priest is the extraordinary minister ͢ Eucharist – lay people (e.g., Mrs. Boshier) can be extraordinary ministers
