The Seven Sacraments • To sanctify men and women • To build up the Body of Christ • To give worship to God • The celebration of the sacrament is accomplished through the power of God. • The power of Christ and his Spirit act in and through the actions of the sacraments. • The fruit of the sacrament depends on the disposition of the one receiving it. Purpose of the Seven Sacraments Signs of the Seven Sacraments

  4. Baptism • Sign-water • Symbol of life and death • Something is destroyed, • Something is brought to life. • The Prayer of the Rite - The Formula for Baptism • “Name, I baptize you…” • Ritual Gesture • Immersion into the water or pouring of water

  5. Confirmation • Sign- chrism • Symbol of abundance and joy • Something is made radiant • with beauty, health, and strength. • The Prayer of the Rite - Formula for Confirmation • “Name, be sealed…” • Ritual Gesture • Laying on of hands and anointing with the oil of chrism

  6. Eucharist • Sign- bread and wine • Signify the goodness of creation (the “fruit of the earth” and “of the vine”) • Ritual Gesture • Extension of hands of the priest during the Prayer, eating and drinking of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ

  7. Penance/Reconciliation • Sign- Sorrow for sins • Prayer of the Rite • Formula of Absolution • Ritual Gesture • Extension of hands over penitent

  8. Anointing of the Sick • Sign- oil of the Sick • Ritual Gesture • Laying on of hands and anointing with the oil of the sick
