  2. HISTORIA DE EMELEC • El Club Sport Emelec es un club deportivo de Guayaquil, Ecuador. Fue fundado el 28 de abril de 1929 por el estadounidense George Capwell, en ese entonces superintendente de la Empresa Eléctrica del Ecuador. Su principal deporte es el fútbol, milita en la Serie A de Ecuador y es local en el Estadio George Capwell. Se ha coronado campeón del Campeonato Ecuatoriano de Fútbol en diez ocasiones: 1957 (primer campeón nacional), 1961, 1965 (campeón invicto), 1972, 1979, 1988, 1993, 1994, 2001 (ese año también fue subcampeón de la Copa Merconorte) y 2002. Es el único equipoecuatoriano que ha sido campeón en todas las décadas en las que se han disputado campeonatos nacionales.
